The year 2009 will also be known as "The Taylor Swift year." She has owned it. She has broken records and won award after award. Is she the best singer in the world? No. Does she know how to perform? Yes. The girl can entertain.
But you know what else she is good at? Social media. At 19, she has grown up in an era where computers have always been within reach for her. She is truly a digital native. She understands social media and uses it as another tool to engage with her fans.
Here is one of the right ways she uses social media to connect with fans. She tweeted a couple of tweets acknowledging a young fan's video, which sent an enormous amount of other Taylor Swift fans to this video. Fans were tickled to to see that she had come across the video and took the time to share it.
Here's the video. How could I not post this?
And it appears, judging by her Twitter, MySpace and YouTube channel that her record label, Big Machine, has given her free range as to what content she wanted these channels to have. After all, most of the videos on your YouTube channel are videos she, herself, has filmed and edited.
And a side note, you know what else that has worked in Ms. Swift's favor? The fact that she is still super appreciative to this day of all her success. I saw her as an opening act at Paulson Stadium in Statesboro, Georgia, when she opened for Brad Paisley in 2007. I had no idea who she was then, but I do remember her staying after and signing autographs for five hours. That impressed me. And the thing is, I hear she still tries to do this when her schedule permits.
Thus, if Taylor keeps doing what she is doing, I don't think she is going anywhere anytime soon. And judging by her fanbase, I think the world is okay with that.
